Growing up, the first day of school is an important part of students’ academic and social journey. The nerves and excitement of what’s to come in the upcoming school year flood almost every student. However, these feelings may be shaped by all different economic backgrounds. When speaking with educators and asking them what basic things they wished students had on the first day of school, they all mentioned the same three things: a backpack, fresh clothes, and a pair of shoes.
A backpack
This is one of the most essential tools students need on the first day of school. It gives students a way to carry items they call their own and learn responsibility when caring for these items. They are able to carry their homework, organize their supplies, and store personal items throughout the day. Without one, students are left juggling loose papers and items, making it harder for them to get through the school day. Furthermore, students feel as if they stick out like a sore thumb when beside their peers with backpacks. Not only does this affect their academic journey, but also their social experience. Something as simple as a backpack can make a student feel prepared, confident, and ready to learn.
School-Appropriate Clothing
Something as simple as the clothes you put on to show up to class really does make a difference. Students who grow up in situations where they aren’t able to afford or have access to clean, comfortable clothes show up to school feeling as if they don’t belong and can’t relate to peers. When a child lacks self-confidence, this trickles into every aspect of their development, learning, and building relationships with others. A fresh set of clothes isn’t just about appearing presentable, but gives the students a sense of dignity to show up to school with utmost confidence. A child should only worry about getting their homework done on time, not whether or not they will have clean and comfortable clothes.
Shoes
Some students simply get up, get ready for school, put their shoes on, and go about their school day. However, there are many students who don’t get the privilege of getting up and feeling prepared for the school day. A pair of shoes is crucial for a student when showing up on the first day of school through the last. Shoes that fit properly allow children to move freely and comfortably throughout the day. Students who show up without adequate footwear may feel embarrassed or singled out by peers. Something as simple as a good pair of shoes empowers a child to go through their day with ease and confidence and without the added distraction of discomfort or shame.
Ready to Learn Starts With You
Listening to teachers share their concerns about students who show up to the first day of school unprepared reveals how deeply this issue affects everyone in the classroom. It is a reminder that something as small as a backpack, fresh set of clothes, or a pair of shoes can alter the entire experience of a child’s school day. If you are in the position to help, donating basic school supplies is one of the most meaningful ways in investing in the children of the future.
