Moments That Remind Us Why Supporting Students Matters

As a parent or educator, showing up for your student is crucial in building trust, positively impacting self-worth, and driving academic success. Having an advocate supporting you throughout your academic journey can serve as a powerful source of motivation and help cultivate a stronger sense of self-confidence. It is stated that “school budgets are increasingly under strain, especially in communities where student need is greatest”. The harsh reality is that low-income families that are unable to provide for students have major effects academically, emotionally, and socially, resulting in long-term psychological effects.

Additionally, showing up goes beyond financial contributions. It also means being an active and present force in a student’s life. Every act of care, big or small, sends a powerful message that students are individually acknowledged, valued, and worthy. As a community, it is our responsibility to support the students and educators who tirelessly advocate for equal access to educational support, guaranteeing that every learner has the opportunity to achieve regardless of their socioeconomic background.

Equal Access To Basic Needs

Sometimes, a single pair of shoes can make all the difference for a student. This testimonial follows a young man from Africa who arrived at a new school after his family was forced to flee and seek refuge in a camp. With the help of a non-profit organization, he was welcomed into a new school and was given the chance at a fresh beginning. As a junior, he showed interest in joining the cross-country team but couldn’t afford the basic equipment necessary to get involved. Through the support of the non-profit, he received his first pair of running shoes and was given the chance he deserved.

What started as a simple act of financial support resulted in completely changing his life. He was able to succeed so well in cross-country that it ultimately earned him a full athletic scholarship to a university where he is their top runner. This story is a powerful reminder that when a community invests in a student’s potential, whether through a simple gesture at the door or a pair of running shoes, the return on that care can be life-changing. No contribution is too small when it comes to opening doors for students who simply need the opportunity to show what they are capable of.

Small Gestures As The Educator

One powerful example of how showing up for students can truly make a difference comes from a personal testimonial shared by a former student, Kevin. During his senior year, he struggled with math and was put in a lower-level class. He felt invisible, out of place, and at a point of losing interest completely. That all changed because of one teacher who made it a daily habit to personally greet each student at the door.

For a kid who didn’t feel like he belonged, those regular and individualized moments of acknowledgment translated into something important: that he matters. His teacher would greet him by saying simple things like “‘Hello Mr. Brennan!’ ‘Hey Kev!’ ‘How was the soccer game?’ ‘Why are you late? Up to tomfoolery?’”. As a result of these small gestures, Kevin began to engage in class and grew to enjoy it! This story is a prime example of the importance that a small gesture can leave a lasting positive impact in the classroom.

Behind every successful student is someone who believed in them first. Contribute to that reason that they feel as they belong.
